Urban development

Large urban development projects, and smaller ones, are associated with the Blue Links programme.

The Union site

Lille Metropolitan Council's ambition is to develop a major town planning project, the metropolitan pole of Excellence, aiming at the economical development focused on the technical textile sectors (pole of competitiveness Uptex) and the Image-Culture-Media sector through the creation of a new district suitably integrated to the city.

Land operations began in 1998. The project is currently applying for approval as a ZAC (Zone d'Aménagement Concerté). The application for creation has been approved in April 2006 and the first schemes are scheduled for completion in 2007.

The master plan of development includes the requalification of 70 hectares and a commercial scheme of 400 000 sq.m net built area of housing units (900), offices, commercial premises, workshops and other facilities.

The project includes the re-opening to navigation of the Roubaix Canal.

The visitor area of the site is located around the new basin (project opposite) with a view to concretise the re-appropriation of the canal by the city and its inhabitants as well as its enhancement.

The re-opening project regenerates the urban areas crossed.
