The first of the public meetings to present the project, at the town hall in Leers, gave rise to a protest by certain inhabitants, not against the project but against the diposal of contaminated dredging spoil from the canal onto a greenfield site in Leers, reserved for this purpose along with the larger disposal sites at Wasquehal and Wattrelos.

Vice-president of the Lille Metropolitan Park Slimane Tir (left) and VNF's regional director Philippe Rattier insisted on the importance of keeping this option open, without which the whole project would be called into question. However, it not yet certain that the 5ha site at Leers will be needed, depending on the results of studies in progress.
