Dredging pontoons on the home straight!

José Dewulf, dredging pontoon skipper on the Roubaix Canal and the canalised river Marque, will soon have finished his extraordinary nautical ballet for Blue Links. Employed by Ghent Dredging, he is seen here working upstream of the Risban footbridge, just a stone’s throw from the lock at Marcq-en-Baroeul. By 4 July the 70,000 m3 of sediment dredged from the canalised river Marque will have been transferred to the spoil disposal area at Wattrelos. But this professional, who handles the drag-arm and bucket with the efficiency and precision of a dentist, will carry on for a few weeks “chez nous”. Is it the “Welcome to the land of the Ch’tis” phenomenon which makes him prefer the Lille metropolis to his home in Wallonia? Of course not! You will find a full explanation in this Newsletter,  in which we publish our interview with the dredging contractor.

After a pause for the elections in France, we resume publication of our regular information bulletins on the project. There has been no slowing down in the works however, which have continued relentlessly during this period.
